"Had I but one wish for the churches of America I think it would be that they come to see the difference between charity and justice. Charity is a matter of personal attributes; justice, a matter of public policy. Charity seeks to alleviate the effects of injustice; justice seeks to eliminate the causes of it.”
- William Sloane Coffin
Are you interested in thinking about and working to address the root causes of social ills such as poverty, injustice, and systematic oppression? So are we. This group is focused on exploring what we as a church can do to help heal the world and acting on God's call in our lives and our society.

The next Social Justice Group meeting is set for 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 17, at United Christian Church.
The meeting will be in Room 1 (the largest Sunday School room on the north hallway at the church). Another group has rented the church Fellowship Hall for that day, so please enter for the Social Justice meeting via the single door in the north hallway, accessible through the rear parking lot near the portable building.
At the October meeting, we will talk about "fair trade." Margaret Griffin will do some homework to define fair trade for us. Tim Tutt has invited a local person who is beginning a fair trade clothing company.
In the meantime, the group will be working on payday lending matters. |
Meeting notes from August 8, 2010.

The Center for Public Policy Priorities, headed by retired District Judge Scott McCowan (a leader in the state judiciary while he served as a Travis County District Jdge) has a power point presentation they are using around the state. As we have discussed healthcare as one of our issues of concern, this might be of interest to us. You can download it by clicking here.
The United Church of Christ also has a number of resources on this issue. Click here to review those resources. |

These are some sites that Ernest provided. Keep in mind that these are NOT part of the UCC site, so filter appropriately. The inclusion of a site does not endorse that site's political positions, but instead suggests only that it might be a useful resource for information.
Feel free to add any sites that you find important in the comments.
