How To Join

We are very happy to have you worship with us and participate in our programs, whether or not you feel membership is right for you at this time. When you are ready, church membership will be a natural step for you, as a way to express your joy in -- and responsibility for -- this faith community.

Below are some frequently asked questions.  If you have more questions, please call Pastor Tim at 218-8110 and he will be happy to talk to you.

How do I become a member?
Adults may choose to join the church by letter of transfer, declaration of faith or baptism by immersion. For infants we offer either dedication or baptism. There is a confirmation seminar for youth which culminates in confirmation or baptism. In this regard we are one of the few churches in the nation that can call itself "a full-service church."

The congregation welcomes new members with a "New Member Litany" in worship, a formal way of saying "welcome."

Our New Member Coordinator, Lynette Alcorn, offers a two hour “Prospective Members Class” for those who desire membership or just want more information about our church and its programs. Scheduled throughout the year, this class is offered on a Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a light supper provided.

What are some benefits of membership?
Each member has a vote at our congregational meetings, which are held several times a year. Most importantly, you will be a part of this vital, progressive church community.

If you have any questions regarding the membership process, please contact our pastor, Rev. Tim Tutt, at 218-8110 or email him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

What is my financial responsibility as a member?
We recognize one of the great truths of all the world's major religions: generosity is central to a healthy spiritual life. Members and participants (whether as individuals, partners, or as families) are expected to participate in our Annual Canvass and make a pledge of financial support. Pledging is the primary means for raising the funds necessary for sustaining the mission of this dynamic church. United Christian Church is completely supported by those who consider themselves to be a part of this community/ We receive no outside financial support.

What is a pledge?
A pledge is a promise made by each congregant to financially support this church to the best of his or her ability. In return, the pastor and staff promise to provide the broad range of worship experiences, educational programs, community building, and social justice activities that make United Christian Church all that it is today. A high level of commitment and a spirit of generosity develop over time, and are the results of active participation in our programs.

How often do I make a pledge?
When you join the church as a new member, you are asked to make your first pledge by using the Pledge Card found in the New Member Packet. This initial pledge is for the remainder of this calendar year, ending December 31. After that, as a member, you will be asked to make a new pledge each autumn during our Annual Canvass.

How much should I plan to give each year?
Our current budget is almost $300,000. Meeting this goal is shared by everyone who participates in our community. A high level of commitment and a spirit of generosity develop over time, and are the result of active participation in our programs.

May I use automatic withdrawal?
Yes. To establish automatic checking withdrawal, submit a voided check when you turn in your pledge card. Paying your pledge by automatic checking withdrawal actually extends the value of your pledge, as it is less costly for the church to administer. If you pay your pledge with cash, please use one of the pew envelopes and mark it with your name, so we may credit your account. Loose cash is appreciated but impossible to track. We issue statements throughout the year to let you know where you stand regarding your pledge.

If you have questions about your pledge, contact the Stewardship and Finance Committee Chair.
